is a designer of settings and costumes for theatre and film. His recent Broadway productions include: sets for 1776, sets and costumes for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and settings for The Cripple of Inishmaan at the Public Theatre. His 19 films include work with Bob Fosse, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Ken Russell, Volcker Schlondorf, and Francois Truffaut. His graphic work includes many book and magazine illustrations and caricatures for Playbill, Theatre Arts, Vogue, etc., and he has designed the posters for many Broadway and West End shows. He has co-produced six productions — plays and musicals — in London, three in association with Hal Prince. His designs for opera have been seen at London’s Royal Covent Garden, Sadler’s Wells, and throughout Europe and America. His many ballet designs include Peter and the Wolf for American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House. He has designed and directed The Importance of Being Earnest and Major Barbara at the Irish Repertory Theatre and directed Noel Coward’s Song of Twilight for the Bay Street Theatre Festival. Awards include the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony (three Tonys out of 14 nominations). He has been elected to the Interior Decorators Hall of Fame and the Theatre Hall of Fame.
