John Guare wrote Six Degrees of Separation (1990 New York Drama Critics Circle Award/Best Play Hull-Warriner Award, Obie), which has been produced in Great Britain, Australia, South Africa, Istanbul, Japan, Germany, Sweden, and Israel. The film version of the play was directed by Fred Schepisi. Guare is the author of The House of Blue Leaves (1971 New York Drama Critics Circle Award/Best American Play, Outer Critics Circle Award, Obie), Rich and Famous, Marco Polo Sings a Solo, Landscape of the Body (1978 Hull-Warriner Award), Bosoms and Neglect, Lydie Breeze, Gardenia, and Women and Water. He wrote the lyrics and was co-author of the book for Two Gentlemen of Verona (1972 New York Drama Critics Circle Award/Best Musical, Tony Award/Best Musical), and wrote the screenplay for Atlantic City (New York, Los Angeles, and National Film Critics Circle awards, Oscar nomination). He received the Award of Merit from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and in 1989 was elected as a member. He serves on the Council of the Dramatists Guild. He is co-editor of The Lincoln Center New Theater Review and co-produces the new plays Reading Room series at the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts.
